Woman at Point Zero

Woman at Point Zero by Nawal El Saadawi is a provocative text in translation and a mainstay in many IB courses–for good reason.  This relatively short novel packs a punch and chronicles the experiences of Firdaus, a young Egyptian woman who is in prison awaiting her execution for murdering her pimp.  The bulk of the novel is in the voice of Firdaus as she informs her listener of the endless cycle of neglect and abuse she suffered as a young girl growing up in a male-dominated world.  A perfect novel for any IB English student and one that engages readers from the first page.
